1.  Where does Mr. Campbell want David to take the letter in Chapter 1?

Answer: House of Shaws in Cramond

2.  What does David find out about the House of Shaws in Chapter 2 and
how does his attitude towards his uncle change?

Answer: He discovers that the house seems to have little respect in the
countryside, especially Ebenezer himself. David suspects that his uncle
is a mean old man.


3.  What is Ebenezer's threat towards David in Chapter 3?

Answer: Ebenezer threatens to throw him out if he sends word to anyone
about the poverty of the House of Shaws.


4.  In Chapter 4 David finds a book in the library dedicated to his
Uncle Ebenezer. Who is it signed by?

Answer: By David's Father

5.  In Chapter 5 there is a note for Ebenezer from whom?
Answer: Captain Hoseason

 
Chapters 11 - 20

1. What was the purpose of the parley after the Battle of the Round-House?
 
Answer: The remaining crew was desperate for alcohol, which David and Alan held. David and Alan needed the man labor to utilize the ship and get them to Stewart lands.
 
 
2. What is the signifigance of Alan's silver button?
 
Answer: Alan giving one of his prized buttons to David symbolizes their new trust. Alan says, "Wherever ye go and show that button, the friends of Alan Breck will come around you." This is true, as when David is shipwrecked, Alan's network of friends help the two men reunite.
 
 
3. Who is the "Red Fox" and why does Alan despise him so much?
 
Answer: The Red Fox is actually Colin Roy Campbell of Glenure, a royal agent. Alan, a Stewart, sees the Campbells as eternal enemies. Campbell plans to boot out the Stewart tenants in order to keep the more of the villagers' money for his clan. 
 
 
4. How do Alan and David become wanted criminals?
 
Answer: Colin Campbell is talking to David when he is murdered. David tries to catch the murderer, but is not sucessful. when he returns to the scene of hte crime, one of Campbell's men accuses David of the crime. Alan is a natural suspect because of his leadership position in the Stewart clan.
 
 
5. After the murder of Colin Campbell, how does David prove his loyalty to Alan?
 
Answer: At the house of James Stewart, David takes the blame for the murder and agrees to have his likeness sketched for the authorities. He also remains with Alan, even though they would both be hanged if they were caught.
 
 
Chapters 21 - 30

1.About how long did it take for David to recover from his illness so that he and Alan could prepare for their journey?
 
Answer: Less Than A Month.

2.Since Alan or David could not decide whether they should cross the river, or take a boat across the see, what was the plan for them to get help?       

Answer: Alan persuaded the lass that had served them in the past to help them get a boat after he had mentioned to her how ill David was.

3.What was the competition over between Alexander and Ebenezer, and why was this important to David?                                                                       

Answer: In their youth Alexander and Ebenezer asked the same girl in marriage, though Alexander got her hand in marriage, Ebenezer in a consilation prize was given the estate.  This benifits David tremendously because he is now the legal owner of the estate.

4.What critical question did Alan ask Ebenezer that brought discomfort?

Answer: Whether to kill David or pay much money to keep him alive, Ebenezer chooses to keep him alive because he believes David to be "A Moral Man".

5.When David and Alan we're leaving to Edinburgh what we're their plans?

Answer: Alan was to hide in the countryside and every now and then come to a spot where David or a messanger could come in contact with him, and David was to seek a lawyer (Appin Stewart) who could find a ship for Alan's Departure.
